Eli came to Salem in February 2017 to confront his mother about his paternity. Eli explained that he had been curious about his dad's family and had realized that Terrence Grant was not his biological father, as his mother had told him. Eli ran a DNA test and resources at the FBI led him to Salem and David Banning. Eli hoped Valerie would tell him and the Horton family the truth. But, Eli got word that David had died before that happened.
Eli was furious with his mother for keeping the secret. He kept her at arm's length while he explored his Horton roots. Julie was thrilled to meet her grandson and welcomed Eli to the family. Eli received a transfer from the FBI to work in Salem, so he made Salem his permanent home.
Eli began casually dating Gabi Hernandez. Though she was honest with him that she wasn't over Chad, the two enjoyed getting to know each other. However, when Chad was single again, Eli knew he couldn't compete so he bowed out.
He turned his attention toward Lani, who was having problems with her boyfriend, J.J. The two bonded when they were investigating Deimos Kiriakis on kidnapping charges. The case took them to Greece, where they got stranded on an island after a plane crash with Sonny, Paul, J.J., Gabi and Chad. John and Marlena rescued them from the island. Eli's brush with death helped patch things up with his mom as well.
Julie was so happy when they were rescued and brought back to Salem, she bought the Martin House for Eli and threw a party for him. Furious that his enemies were getting the best of him, Deimos disguesed himself as a bartender and drugged the Champaign toast at the party. Eli and Lani kissed while on the drug and woke up on the couch together. The two had no idea what happened -- nor did anyone else at the party.
But, the next morning they found Deimos dead. Everyone at the party was a suspect.
