Nina Webster grew up poor in Detroit, raised by her mother Flo, a former prostitute who never had known who Nina's father was, just that he had a certain scar on his neck. As a teenager, Nina discovered that she was pregnant by a boy named Jimmy who was incarcerated in juvenile hall. Nina ran away from home and was found on a park bench in Genoa City by Cricket Blair. They became best friends. Nina moved into a home for unwed mothers run by Rose DeVille, who, unbeknownst to Nina, headed a black-market baby ring. Just before her son was born, Nina had a change of heart about the adoption. So Rose abandoned Nina on the delivery table, and kidnapped her newborn son. Nina and Cricket did manage to track down Rose, and saw a couple leave with a newborn baby just before they were kidnapped by a man in a van. They later escaped, but by then Rose had disappeared. Cricket, Nina and Danny were unsuccessful in locating Rose or Nina's baby. Even though Paul Williams took on the case several years later, there were no leads to follow.

Cricket and Nina became roommates, and Cricket and Danny worked with her to polish her rough edges. Then Nina set her sights on her only friend Cricket's boyfriend, Phillip Chancellor III, heir to the Chancellor fortune. Nina got Phillip drunk, seduced him, and ended up pregnant. Katherine Chancellor and Phillip's mother, Jill, disapproving of Nina, tried but failed to buy her off. Nina had a son, Phillip IV, and she and Phillip III married. Jill and Kay set Nina up by hiring handsome Jabot employee, Chase Benson, to seduce Nina and prove her an unfit mother. Their plan backfired. But Phillip III's drinking problem soon led to his death when his sports car slammed into a tree, and Nina inherited a sizable fortune.

David Kimble showed up in Genoa City as the hot new Assistant to Jill Abbott, who was in charge of the Men's Line at Jabot Cosmetics. David romanced Jill, knowing that she was connected to the Chancellor fortune, and hoped to get his hands on it. But Jill moved on to Attorney Michael Crawford, and fired David. Once David realized that Jill's daughter-in-law Nina had just inherited a sizable fortune from her deceased husband, Phillip, he was intent on getting it instead. Nina fell for David despite the warnings of her best friends Cricket Blair, Danny Romalotti, and Chase Benson who were suspicious of David's motives. David threatened Cricket that he would cut up her face and she would never model again if she didn't stay out of his business. Cricket told Nina, but Nina was so in love she didn't believe her. David and Nina shocked everyone when they quickly eloped, and he signed a prenuptial agreement to prove his love. Nina set up David in a company named David A. Kimble Investments, but he really had no clients, just sat at a desk in an office reading the paper, and faked business calls whenever Nina would drop by. It didn't take long before he had affair with the mailroom attendant, Diane Westin. David soon realized that Nina's inheritance was in a trust for her son Phillip IV, so the only way he could get his hands on the Chancellor fortune was to adopt her son. David pressured Nina to agree to the adoption, but Jill and Katherine Chancellor helped her to resist.

David's lover Diane found a New Jersey newspaper clipping about heiress Rebecca Harper who had been murdered by her husband, Tom. The photo of Tom and Rebecca showed a man who looked like David, and she was wearing a brooch like the one David had given to Nina as a present. David discovered that Rebecca's friend Vivian was in Genoa City intent on finding the brooch to prove that David murdered Rebecca, but it wasn't long before her body was discovered electrocuted in her bathtub. While digging into David's background, Cricket also found the photo of Rebecca with David and recognized the brooch. Cricket exposed the information to Nina, but she had already learned about it from Diane, and also that David was plotting to murder both Nina and Phillip. While she was with Danny in New Jersey, Cricket found a jeweler who identified the brooch as belonging to Rebecca Harper. So David framed Danny for cocaine possession to get them off his tail, but all charges where eventually dropped. Soon after, Danny and Cricket were married.

Feeling betrayed and infuriated, a crazed Nina welcomed David home by shooting him five times. David survived, but pretended to be paralyzed, and Nina was arrested for attempted murder. While on the witness stand, Nina testified that she shot David out of self-defense because she was convinced that he wanted to kill her and Phillip. Her emotional testimony moved the jury and she was found not guilty. Meanwhile, David stole a body from the morgue, planted it in his hospital bed, and set it on fire to fake his own death. David coerced a plastic surgeon to make him look like David Hasselhoff. (Joke: A former Y&R actor.) Instead, the surgeon carved the word KILLER on his forehead and fled while David was under the anesthetic.

David returned to Genoa City as "Jim Adams" with makeup over the scar on his forehead, hair dyed gray, a mustache and a southern accent. He romanced and married Nina's mother, Flo, and manipulated Nina into changing her will so that he and Flo would be co-beneficiaries in the event of Nina's death. Nina, Danny, and Cricket attended a masquerade ball charity event, and David showed up dressed as a wolf, the identical costume to Danny's, intending to kill them all. But David's former mistress, Diane, learned of his plan and replaced the bullets in his gun with wax ones. When David cornered the trio in a shrubbery maze outdoors, unbeknown to the viewers, the trio was in on it, and convinced David that he had shot and killed all three. While David was being pursued by the police and detective Paul Williams, he ducked into a garbage chute and was crushed to death by the trash compactor.

Nina began an affair with Ryan McNeil, and when his marriage ended, Ryan moved in with Nina and young Phillip. Nina became pregnant, and he married her out of obligation. After Nina's miscarriage, Ryan realized he truly did love her, but he had become a devoted father to Phillip, and encouraged Nina to get her college degree. After Nina had a one night stand with her boss, novelist Cole Howard, who was married to Ryan's first wife Victoria, Cole's rejection caused Nina to suffer a nervous breakdown. She alienated Ryan, and Ryan and Nina separated.

Nina was referred to Dr. Tim Reid for help with her failing marriage. As Nina continued to see Dr. Tim, she told him how her husband Ryan was seeing a younger, prettier, thinner woman (Tricia Dennison). Dr. Tim reminded Nina to take hope in that she and her husband had been separated for months, but Ryan still had not filed for divorce. Nina gave permission for Dr. Tim to talk with Ryan, and he advised him to make every effort to win back his wife and ask her to stop working for Cole, the man who had originally come between them. Ryan decided to move back in with Nina and her son Phillip (who was later-in-life known as Chance) for a trial month, and told Tricia that their relationship was over. Although happy to be back with Phillip, whom he considered his own son, Ryan was unable to dredge up any feelings for Nina. At Dr. Tim's suggestion, Nina hired a personal trainer and began to lose weight. The evening of their wedding anniversary Nina got dolled up and she and Phillip welcomed Ryan home with a cake and fancy dinner. Phillip urged them to reminisce about how they met and fell in love, and to dance together. Ryan got back some of "that loving feeling" and kissed Nina as they danced.

After an altercation with Nina, Tricia decided to win Ryan back by making him jealous in seeing her with someone else, and it worked. Nina tried to seduce Ryan, but at the last minute Ryan stopped her, saying he couldn't do it, as thoughts of Tricia swirled in his head. Nina burst into tears, guessing correctly that Tricia was the problem, and told him to pack his bags and go to Tricia. She woke up the next morning to find Ryan sleeping on the couch. But after finding out that Nina let Tricia believe that they had had a torrid night of lovemaking, Ryan tearfully left Nina. Due to the interference of Jill and Tricia's father, Keith, trying to keep them apart, Tricia and Ryan were pushed back together, they declared their love, and Ryan vowed to get a divorce. Young Phillip saw them together, so Nina found out and disappeared.

While Ryan flew to St. Louis to ID a body who might have been Nina, Nina returned home to find Tricia staying at her apartment. Nina screamed at Tricia that she had ruined her marriage, pulled a gun out of her purse and was pointing it at Tricia when Ryan arrived home. Ryan got a hysterical Tricia to leave and tried to convince Nina to give him the gun, that he still loved her, and that they could still work it out. But instead Nina put the gun to head, saying that she had nothing to live for. Ryan lunged at Nina, and the gun went off shooting Nina in the spine. After surgery Nina woke up not remembering the incident, and Ryan was arrested for her attempted murder. But after Nina remembered, Ryan was set free. Hearing about Nina's attempted suicide did not help Dr. Tim's already low self esteem, but he helped Nina recover and become a stronger woman who ended up shocking Ryan by filing for their divorce herself.

Nina began emerging as a strong, confident, independent woman, a more refined version of the feisty young Nina of the past. She began working on her first novel; the story of her youth and her stolen baby. Nina met Tomas Del Cerro in a Genoa City restaurant, and recognized him from the photo on the dust jacket of his novel, which she happened to be reading. She hesitantly approached him and asked for an autograph. Tomas smiled, and Nina told him what a fabulous writer he was, and that she wished she were as good. Tomas thanked her, but let her know that the life of a writer was not all fame and happiness. Further encounters turned into hours of writing together, then romantic dates. Although Tomas was apparently falling in love with her as she was with him, there was always a wall hiding his thoughts. Nina eventually discovered a closet full of unfinished manuscripts in his apartment. Tomas was experiencing writer's block and was convinced that he was washed up. Tomas became her mentor, friend, and lover. When Nina wrote a happy ending to her book, Tomas knew it didn't ring true, and helped her realize the only way to end her book, A Cry In Thin Air, was with the truth; that she had never found her stolen baby. She did, and finally getting it out and into print helped Nina to move on.

Tomas' publisher loved her book, and agreed to publish it. Tomas proposed, but Nina hesitated, knowing that Tomas was never open with her, and was not dealing with his own demons. He convinced her to accept his ring, and they became engaged. Then a movie producer became interested in Nina's book, and wanted Nina to go to Los Angeles to become the screenwriter. Tomas' old insecurities surfaced, he became jealous and nasty, and was often drunk, which shocked Nina. In the end, Tomas convinced Nina to leave without him, and let her know that he would not be there when she returned. Nina left for L.A. brokenhearted, hoping to return to Genoa City one day. Her teenage son Phillip later joined her in L.A., and Tomas left Genoa City for parts unknown.

In 2006 we learned that Phillip III was switched at birth by his grandmother Katherine Chancellor, thus was no longer the biological Chancellor heir, but Katherine still considered him her grandson. A man named Cane Ashby later showed up claiming to be the real Phillip Chancellor III.

In November 2008, Nina returned to Genoa City from her home in L.A. to attend the funeral of Katherine Chancellor (who was not really dead, it was her doppelganger, Marge). Nina admitted that she had written a lot of screenplays of books that had never been made into movies. Danny mentioned that it was like a reunion tour to be there with Gina, Paul, Nina, and his son Daniel. Danny mentioned that Christine was in Europe and could not attend. When asked by Gina why she was not sitting with the Chancellor family, Nina remarked, "I thought I'd sit with the people who LIKE me?" She asked Esther, who was the cutie with Brock. Esther said Cane, to which Nina replied, "Well, he's no Phillip!" Cane and Nina later met and Nina called him Jill's real son. Cane corrected, Jill's other son, and that Jill will always think of Phillip as her son. When Cane asked about Nina's son Phillip IV, she said he was unable to attend, being in the Army in Iraq. During the reading of the will, Phillip IV inherited one quarter of one percent in trust, as did each of Kay's grandchildren.

In May 2009, eighty year old Katherine Chancellor married Patrick “Murph” Murphy in the Chancellor garden during a service officiated by her son Brock. Nina showed up in time to catch Jill arriving drunk, and locked her in a closet before she could make a scene. Lauren arrived soon after, and let Jill out, but Cane made Jill sit down and shut up during the ceremony. Afterward Billy and Cane had to drag Jill out while she raved at Kay. Nina decided to stay in Genoa City to write a screenplay of Katherine's book Live Until I Die and collaborate with Amber. Nina felt the movie should focus on Kay's evil deeds like the feud with Jill and baby switch, but Amber felt it should focus on Kay's goodness. Kay felt that if Nina thought it was important to the script, to leave it in. Amber gave Nina some background on how the baby switch had happened and how they'd found Cane, but Nina was skeptical of Cane's story and questioned him about it. Cane called his "uncle Langley" in Australia saying, "Phillip, your wife is going to find out you're still alive", but Phillip told Cane not to worry, it would lead nowhere and blow over. Paul found out that Violet, the woman Cane claimed Jill's baby was given to, had been in a hospital in Arizona at the time of the baby switch, so that part of Cane's story was a lie, but Jill and Kay refused to believe that Cane was not genuine.

Nina was anxious to identify her son's father to find out if he had the gene to confirm or rule out his possible diagnosis of Huntington's disease. When Nina called the lab to get the remains from the prior exhumation re-examined, she was told they had no remains, or any record of it at all in their files. So she had the body exhumed again, but when they opened the coffin, they found it empty. Further tests showed there had never been a body in that coffin, just bags of sand to give it weight. Meanwhile Cane was frantically trying to get hold of "Langley." Jill reluctantly requested another DNA test, and viewers saw Cane pull a vial of blood marked "Langley" from a freezer of dry ice. The blood test was done at the Chancellor estate, but Cane distracted everyone while he substituted the blood vials. The results came in, and all but Nina were thrilled that Cane proved to be Jill's son. Then Paul delivered more news to Nina; tests showed the blood had been frozen, so Nina confronted Cane, asking where he had gotten the blood to pass the test. Cane admitted to Nina that he was a fraud, in front of Kay, Jill, Murphy, Chloe, Neil, and Lily, saying it was not for the money. He insisted he never wanted to hurt anyone and had only meant to heal them, and they had become family to him.

When Cane was asked how he could do that to the people who had given him nothing but love, Jill's son Phillip emerged to say that he had done it; it was his plan. All were stunned to see Phillip again, still alive. Katherine had another mini-stroke and was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. Murphy, Jill, and Nina were with her when Phillip arrived and assured everyone he was very much alive, explaining that at age 19 he had found himself overwhelmed with responsibilities as a young executive at Chancellor and being a new father. As an alcoholic suffering depression, he had attempted suicide by crashing his sports car. When he awoke still alive in the hospital, he managed to pay off a doctor and a policeman to aid in faking his death, then escaped to Australia and began a new life as Langley.

Five years prior to his return “Langley” had met Cane, who had gone to work for Phillip as a bartender in Phillip's bar, and they became friends. Cane had grown up alone without a family and helped Phillip realize what he had probably put everyone through with his death. So they concocted the plan to give Jill and Kay a new son in Cane, making them all happy. He told Nina that he had justified leaving her and their son because he had believed they would both be better off without him. Meanwhile back at the Chancellor Estate, Lily was crushed that Cane had lied to her for years, Neil told him to stay away from Lily, and Billy arrived in time to punch Cane out. Then Phillip dropped a bomb on Nina, telling her that another reason he was so desperate to die or to leave was that he was at 19, and remained, gay!

A few days later, Cane went to the Chancellor Mansion to say goodbye and apologize to Kay and Jill. Phillip tried to get them to stop Cane from leaving, reminding them that they had loved him just a few days before. But Cane slipped out while they were welcoming Nina's son, Phillip IV, who had just returned from Iraq. Phillip, who preferred to be called Chance, unexpectedly found his supposedly dead father as part of his welcome home. Chance's reaction was abnormally calm as he shook his father's hand, saying he was relieved, and that “dead people never came back" where he'd just been. Phillip gave them all some relief by announcing the results of his blood test, that he was not a Huntington's carrier.

Chance told Phillip he was not interested in Phillip's explanation, that Ryan was the only father Chance had ever known. Chloe and Chance began getting to know each other, and Chance admitted that he had been discharged from the Army, was lonesome for his mother and grandmother, intended to stay, and was still a virgin. Nina convinced Chance to meet with his father and get to know him. Phillip explained to him that he was gay and why he had left, but Chance failed to see it as anything but irresponsible, though he appreciated that his father had come back to take the Huntington’s test for him. Phillip offered to stay in town, and they shook hands. Phillip went home and commiserated with Jill about what lousy parents they both were, but he offered forgiveness, knowing she did the best she knew how. And in exchange Jill forgave him for faking his death. Nina admitted to Chance that despite it all, she still loved his father Phillip. Chance admitted that he was falling for Chloe, but Nina disapproved, calling her a gold-digger only wanting a Chancellor, to which Chance countered that she reminded him of Nina.

One day Chance happened to be in Crimson Lights when a guy tried to rob it by pulling a knife on Gloria. Chance interceded and was stabbed in the stomach. Nina and Phillip rushed to the hospital and met Jill and Chloe. As Chance went in to surgery with a ruptured spleen, Phillip was distraught with regret for leaving him as a baby, afraid that Chance would die without them reconciling. After his surgery, Chloe realized how much she really cared and told him she had signed the divorce papers from Billy, and that Chance was the man that she wanted. Phillip had disappeared and everyone was concerned that he had run away again, but Paul was there for Nina, and tried to explain from his experience with Heather how out of place Phillip must be feeling. Phillip bought Chance a copy of Huckleberry Finn, the book that Phillip used to read to him when Chance was a child. Chance read Phillip's heartfelt inscription, and he asked why it was not signed. Phillip had been unsure how to sign it, but Chance said that "Dad" was fine. Later Phillip got word that there was trouble back home in Australia, so he returned to take care of it, and to wind up things with his bar.

Old friends Nina and Paul began spending a lot of time together, and were surprised themselves when their feelings turned romantic. Nina was good for Paul, especially when his sister Patty went into a coma after trying to commit suicide, taking him to movies and skating to get his mind off his problems.

During the annual charity ball Chance and Chloe came to an understanding, and went home to make love in Chance’s room with candles to set the mood. Unfortunately, the next morning Nina returned from L.A. and walked in on them coming out of the shower together wearing only towels. After Chance left for work, Nina confronted Chloe about trapping her son. Chloe told her not to worry, that she had turned down his marriage proposal – which made Nina worry all the more.

Months later, a small party was held at the Chancellor estate for Chance and Chloe to announce their engagement. Police detective Chance’s new partner, Detective Ronan Malloy, arrived at the party and became friendly with Chloe who was very suspicious of him. Nina told everyone what she thought of Chloe, so Paul had to take her outside and calm her down. After witnessing how Heather looked at Chance, and how much Nina obviously preferred her for her son, Chloe arranged to live in Kevin’s spare room to be in the same building where Heather was living, with Chance staying there nights as her bodyguard. Chance was not pleased, accused her of just being jealous, and tried to convince her to trust him.

Just as Paul and Nina’s newfound romance began to heat up and they had made love for the first time, Christine, in town for a visit, came knocking at Paul’s door. Chatting with Nina, Chris said she had been emailing with Phillip and knew all about his return from the dead and Chance being engaged. Chris gave Nina and Paul her blessing, but as she left, it appeared she had expected a reunion with Paul instead. After some reminiscing by Nina, Paul, and Chris that touched on Nina’s stolen first baby, and Paul volunteered to search for him again.

Christine told Ronan, who was actually working undercover with her for the Justice Department, that Nina and Paul were searching for Nina’s first son, who was stolen at birth. Christine was afraid that they might discover that Ronan was that son. Chris was unable to disclose Ronan’s identity to anyone or she would jeopardize the case. Chloe figured out that he was Nina’s son by his birth date, and confronted Ronan with his real name, Aiden Lansing. Ronan admitted he was working undercover and shared with Chloe that two parents, the Lansings, had raised him and sacrificed everything for him. Chloe hoped to get Ronan to warm up to Nina and Chance after the case was closed. But Ronan was reluctant, saying that working undercover, he enjoyed getting into another persona, which appealed to the part of him that felt like something was missing. He said that he could never have a personal life – there was just too much risk. Chloe and Ronan eventually had sex together, but afterward Ronan said it could never happen again.

Meanwhile, Paul tracked down Pete Bender, (the man who drove the van and kidnapped Nina & Chris when they were teenagers), to the prison hospital in Waupun. Bender gave Paul the name of the family who bought Nina’s baby, and Paul found the information he gave to an ecstatic Nina - that her son had been named Aiden Lansing, grew up in South Lakeland, went to Lakeside High, was an honor student, senior class vice president, a football star, went to college in California, and that his parents, the Lansings, were dead. Paul’s contact faxed them a newspaper photo of Aiden with his grade school football team, which Paul got someone to enhance and do an aged sketch of what the boy would look like grown up.

Because she and Paul were getting too close again, and out of respect for her friend Nina, Chris prepared to return to Washington, D.C. But before she left town she stopped at Jimmie’s Bar for a drink and ended up necking with Nick Newman in a booth. Nina, well aware of their undying love and attraction, tipped Paul that Christine was leaving. Paul caught up with her, but Chris said she felt that things were the way they were meant to be, and she was spoiling it, so she left.

Ronan convinced Sid Meeks he was on Sid’s side, which got him a meeting with the ring leader, who turned out to be D.A. Owen Pomerantz. Pomerantz told Ronan they would not trust him unless he killed Chance, and Ronan agreed to do it. Meanwhile, Chance confronted Chloe about trusting Ronan enough to sleep with him, and Chloe had to tell him that he and Ronan were brothers. At the same moment, Paul and Nina got their first look at an aged sketch of what her son would look like grown-up, which was made from a newspaper photo of Aiden and his grade school football team.

Ronan told Pomerantz that he had set up a meeting with Chance in order to kill him. Later Chance confronted Ronan about their being brothers, and off-screen made plans to trap Pomerantz and Meeks. Just in case things did not go as planned, Chance made sure to spend quality time with his loved ones. Chloe realized what he was doing and begged Chance not to go through with the meeting. Chance left to make amends with Heather. She admitted that she loved him, and he refused her offer to call her father, Paul, to back him up.

Ronan, armed with the untraceable gun Meeks and Pomerantz had given him, met them with their suitcases of drugs at a warehouse. They checked Ronan for a wire and warned him that if he didn’t kill Chance, they would kill both Chance and Ronan. Chance arrived at the warehouse and drew his gun on Meeks, Pomerantz and another dirty cop, telling him they were headed to Internal Affairs.

Back at the Chancellor mansion, Nina, Chloe and Heather were gathered with Paul to trace Chance’s location by his cell phone’s GPS. Nina expressed her distrust of Ronan, so Paul decided it was time to tell her the truth - that Ronan was an FBI agent working undercover in Genoa City, and that Ronan would be there to protect Chance. Heather added that they had not told Nina before because they'd been sworn to secrecy. Chloe then exposed to everyone that Ronan was Chance’s brother, and Nina’s stolen son. Nina was stunned as Paul received word of Chance’s location, and they all left to find him.

At the warehouse, Ronan appeared behind Chance, his gun pointed at his brother, and Paul and Nina burst in just as Ronan shot Chance in the chest. Medics arrived and pronounced Chance dead. Heather and Chloe sobbed while a grief-stricken Nina attacked Ronan for killing his own brother. Meeks and Pomerantz directed the police to arrest Ronan for Chance’s murder. As Chance was being wheeled out, Nina realized that he had been saying goodbye to everyone all that day. Back at the mansion, Nina ran upstairs in tears and Paul was left to break the news to Chance’s father, Phillip; his grandmother, Jill; Kay; and Murphy. Phillip comforted Nina as she realized that Chris must have known that Ronan was her son all along. When a stunned Chris arrived at Nina’s door, Nina slammed the door in her face. Chris tried to justify her actions to Paul, but he rebuffed her as well. Later a uniformed Army officer arrived at the door to help the family make arrangements. He showed Nina his prosthetic leg, and credited Chance with saving his life in Afghanistan.

At the police station, Heather confronted Ronan who claimed he had shot Chance in self-defense. Then Heather demanded that Pomerantz rehire her so she could prosecute Ronan since it was due to Ronan’s claims that she had been fired.

A wake was held at the Chancellor mansion the night prior to Chance’s military funeral, with his ashes later to be interred at Arlington National Cemetery. Jill told Nina that Nina was a better mother to Chance than Jill had been to either of her sons, and there was no way that Chance could have been a drug ring leader as the D.A. claimed. Katherine, Jill, and Nina received newlyweds Billy and Victoria, plus Victor and Nikki, Tucker, Jack, and Abby at the Chancellor Estate.

Kevin did his best to get Chloe out of her depression, and he accompanied her to the wake. Nina admitted to Chloe that she was glad that Chloe had allowed Chance to experience love and a relationship as a father figure to her daughter. After Chloe blew up at her mother, Esther, Kevin took her home and attempted to get her to grieve. Everyone told stories about Chance including Nina about how he had always wanted a puppy from Santa, and that once she finally sold a script and they moved to a bigger place, she had gotten him one. After Jill gave a final thank you to the guests and a toast to the wonderful young man Chance was, Kay was overcome and nearly fainted.

Brock returned to Genoa City to officiate at Chance’s funeral and Traci Abbott sent flowers and a note. Chloe made a scene when Heather arrived, but Kay put a stop to it. Chance’s parents, Nina and Phillip followed the flag-draped closed casket carried down the aisle by an honor guard, and were followed by grandmother Jill with Billy and Cane on each arm, then Katherine and Murphy. Phillip gave a very touching eulogy about how even though he had abandoned Chance when he was a baby, Chance had forgiven him as an adult. Jill said that Chance had gotten the best of all of those who were around him growing up, from Phillip’s warmth and good looks, Nina’s devotion and strength, Brock’s generosity and forthrightness, Katherine’s zest for life, and Esther’s loyalty, to her own determination and stubbornness, creating a whole that was better than the sum of his parts. Katherine said a few words about how Chance had enriched all their lives. The folded flag was presented to Nina while a rifle salute and Taps played. Then all who loved him placed a red rose on the casket.

Suddenly Nina cried out, “How dare you!” as Christine arrived with Ronan. Ronan showed his FBI credentials and arrested Pomerantz, Meeks, and their cohorts, explaining that Chance was the one wearing the wire, and the FBI arrived and took them away. The funeral turned into a screaming match with Nina calling Chris and Ronan disrespectful and tried to send them away.

Christine arranged for Phillip and Nina to be taken by an FBI man to an out of the way location where they met her and Ronan. Then Chance emerged from the shadows, very much alive. Nina and Phillip hugged him while Chris and Chance disclosed that it was all a setup, and that Chance would be going into the witness protection program, very possibly to never be seen or heard from again. But this was the only way to protect him and keep him alive, and Nina and Phillip had to keep the secret, and no one else could ever know the truth.

Nina and Ronan exchanged some heartfelt words as Ronan told her that he had found out she was his mother back when his FBI background check disclosed his illegal adoption as a black market baby, and he had read her book and knew of the ordeal Nina went through ever since. Sadly, Ronan told Nina that he had to leave with Chance and would be going back undercover, so would be unable to see her, but he promised to keep in touch by phone. Phillip told Chance he was very proud of his son, and hugged him goodbye. Chance and Nina parted, agreeing to keep in touch the way they had when he was deployed, to look at the moon at 9:00 PM each night, and know that the other was safe and missing them. Ronan and Chance drove away, and Nina, Phillip, and Christine returned to the Chancellor mansion, and did not say a word about what had happened. But later, thinking that Katherine’s health was endangered because of it, Christine told Katherine the truth.

Ronan later returned to Genoa City, assigned to help the police department uncover its corruption. Ronan visited Nina at the Chancellor estate and began to get to know each other. Nina gave Ronan the copy of her book she had found among Chance’s things which contained notes that showed that Chance had been actively searching for Ronan for a long time. Chloe walked in on their goodbye embrace, she refused to forgive Ronan for killing Chance, and was unable to understand how Nina could forgive him either.

Heather noticed how much trouble Ronan had grasping objects, that he took medication, and nearly fainted a few times, but Ronan refused to admit that anything was wrong with him. Nina invited Ronan to spend Thanksgiving with her and Paul at the Chancellor mansion, but he claimed he had to work. So Heather coerced Ronan into attending by threatening to expose his health problem to Nina. Days later, Ronan blacked out and Heather took him to the hospital where the diagnosis he'd gotten in Boston of hereditary amyloidosis was confirmed; the same disease his father had died of at about the same age. Heather began to care more and more for Ronan, showing up at his dingy hotel room with food, encouraging him to eat, and to get close to Nina and fight his disease. They became lovers, as Ronan found out that his only hope to live would be a liver transplant. Heather convinced Ronan to accompany her to the Chancellor estate to spend Christmas with his mother Nina, and Nina, who was missing Chance, was overjoyed to see her other son.

Ronan refused to tell his mother of his condition, so Heather told Nina. Nina went to Ronan and assured him that they would fight this together. Because Heather was subpoenaed to be a witness at the former D.A.’s trial, she and Paul listened to a copy of the tape made the night that Chance was killed. Paul recognized the gunshots as blanks, and further investigation revealed that the paramedics who took Chance’s body away were fakes. So Heather went to Ronan with their theory that Chance was still alive, which caused Ronan to admit that he was in witness protection. When Christine found out that Heather knew, she fired Ronan for mishandling the case. After Nina was tested, but was not a match to donate part of her liver to help Ronan, she convinced Chris to tell Chance. Paul was telling Nina that he was not a match either, when Christine and Heather arrived, so Nina told Paul that Chance was still alive. Christine said that Chance was being tested, and if he was a match the donation would happen after Chance testified at the former D.A.’s trial. Ronan tried to leave town, but Nina caught him at the bus station and talked him into staying and fighting this together with her, Heather, and Paul.

Ronan and Heather went ice skating with Paul and Nina. Ronan told them about his adoptive mother, an amateur figure skater who taught classes, and that he played hockey so he had learned a few tricks like a back-checking Salchow from her. Then Ronan passed out, and was taken to Genoa City Memorial, where he was told that he needed the liver transplant soon or he would die. Christine showed up to announce that Chance was a match, and that he was in town to testify. Meanwhile, Jill, who was mourning the death of her “son” Cane, was taken to her room to rest by Nina, and there stood her bearded and very much alive grandson, Chance. Chance said he was there to help Jill get over Cane, and to help Ronan. Jill was miffed that everyone seemed to know that Chance had never died but her, but was just relived to have him back. Heather was thrilled to see Chance again, but made it clear that her love was with Ronan.

Nate Hastings, a Rheumatology specialist practicing in Boston, returned to Genoa City to perform the partial liver transplant on Ronan, using part of Chance's liver. In the waiting room were Jill, Paul, Heather, Nina, Phillip who had arrived from his home in Australia, Kay with Murphy who had just been told about Chance, and Chloe, who was told when she arrived wondering why everyone was there. Chance came through the surgery fine, but as soon as Ronan's surgery was finished, Ronan was taken away by an unmarked helicopter under orders from the FBI. Nate was shocked and very concerned for his patient, saying it was very dangerous for Ronan in his condition. Chris knew nothing about the transfer, and her superiors were not answering their phones. Chance was released from the hospital and was taken back to the Chancellor Estate to recuperate. After Chris got confirmation that Ronan had ordered his own transfer, only Nina still had faith in Ronan.

Waiting for the trial, Chance recovered from surgery, sequestered in his room at the Chancellor Estate. Heather visited Chance and told him that she hated him for lying to her and faking his death, then fell into his arms and they made love. Nina and Phillip threw Chance a birthday party, where he disappointed everyone when he admitted that he was probably going back into witness protection after his testimony.

The trial began and Chance was announced as the first witness. As Chance approached the stand in his dress blues, he got a text message telling him that his girlfriend would be killed if he testified. Chance faked a severe pain to get a recess to discuss the situation with prosecutor Christine, Paul, and his parents. Paul noticed the call had come from his daughter Heather's phone, and Christine got the FBI to try to track it.

Meanwhile Heather was tied up and blindfolded at the boarded-up Treetop Taxidermy Shop, taken and held there by Angelo, the same thug who was threatening Jeffrey over money owed a bookie. Back outside the courtroom, Paul told that he knew what he had to do, and Chance bravely continued his testimony against Pomerantz and Meeks while they glared at him. Chance testified how he had investigated the drug ring, how it had led to the defendants, how he was setup for drug possession, and how people had started getting killed once they knew he was onto them. Chance then told how he and Ronan had set up the sting in which he had faked his death. The recording from that night was played including Pomerantz's orders, the gunshot, and Chance's supposed death. After his testimony, Chance confronted Pomerantz telling him that he would not get away with it, and Owen said that Chance had just killed his girlfriend. The bailiff called Angelo, and Angelo told Heather that she would be killed, but that he was leaving, and someone else would do the job.

Back at the courthouse, the FBI man announced that the van in the surveillance video of Heather's abduction was last seen traveling west on route 12. Chance admitted that he was in love with Heather as he and Paul left vowing to find Heather alive, leaving Phillip and Nina to console each other.

Heather found a knife and was able to cut herself loose, but was unable to get out of the building. In her desperation to get out before her killer arrived, she started the place on fire. Chance and Paul saw the fire from the highway and got her outside where she came-to. As they waited for the ambulance to arrive, Chance told Heather that he loved her, and that she was the one. Later Pomerantz and Meeks cut a deal, and were sentenced to Walworth Prison.

Chance laid low living at the Chancellor estate, and discussed going back into the witness protection program with Heather. Heather decided that she did not love Chance enough to give up her life to follow him, so they broke up. Chance then informed his family that he had re-enlisted in the Army. Although broken-hearted and fearful that he was leaving them again by putting his life on the line while deployed to the Middle East, Nina, Phillip, Jill, and Katherine threw a going away Memorial Day pool party, raised a flag, and proudly sent him on his way.

In August 2011, Nina returned from Los Angeles announcing that Chance was missing. Although she had been getting regular emails, she suddenly stopped hearing from him, and had alerted Phillip in Australia. That same day, Paul was shocked when Ronan showed up as an investigator at the crime scene where Diane Jenkins had been murdered. Paul asked for an explanation of why Ronan had disappeared and where he had been, but Ronan said he had been rehired by the Genoa City Police, and that was all Paul needed to know. Nina was stunned when she ran into Ronan at the police station while looking for Paul. Then Ronan hurt her feelings when he refused to give her any explanation for why he had disappeared or hadn't told her that he was back. Nina called him cold-hearted and told him that he was dead to her, and no longer her son. Nina lamented that her missing son was on a classified mission, and the other wanted nothing to do with her, but was consoled by Paul. Heather tried to get Ronan to tell them why he had disappeared and was shutting everyone out, but Ronan refused to talk about it. And although Chloe enticed Ronan into bed, he would only admit that his disappearance had something to do with the FBI.

Chance reappeared in Genoa City several months after he rejoined the military, saying that he had been reassigned by the state department to work with Ronan on the Colin Atkinson case due to Colin's drug trade in the Middle East. After being reunited with Nina, Chance admitted that although he had been working with Ronan, Ronan still had not explained why he had disappeared without a word after the liver transplant.

Christine returned to town in November 2011, she confronted Ronan about his disappearance following the liver transplant, and why he returned to Genoa City where he knew he'd be questioned. When he still refused to tell them anything, Nina told him she was finished trying to build a relationship with him, but if he ever wanted one, he knew where to find her. Teary-eyed, Ronan smashed his fist into a display board and ran out of his office, even past Phyllis. Over coffee, Chance and Christine congratulated Nina for her decision. Phyllis followed Ronan home, and they connected through their mutual screwed up family lives as well as sexually. Ronan admitted that he owed his family his life, but he didn't know how to deal with it. They continued their affair for awhile, but Ronan stepped aside when he could see that she really loved and wanted to be with her ex-husband Nick Newman.

On Veteran's Day, Chance received his orders for his next assignment to the Pentagon, training for an intelligence position in the defense department. Nina got Chance to admit that after his training, he would be heading back to the Middle East.

Nina continued to see Ronan now and then as he worked for the FBI on special assignment to the Genoa City police department to solve the Diane Jenkins murder. Ronan worked with Nina's boyfriend Paul on the case, they got to be good friends. Ronan and Paul cracked the case and Ronan was instrumental in getting the DA not to press charges against Nikki Newman, who it ended up, had killed Diane in self defense, but was too inebriated to remember it.

With the case wound up, Ronan decided it was time to leave town, and ran into Phyllis on the way out. They shared a tender moment where Phyllis tried to get him to show some emotion and say, "Goodbye Phyllis. I will miss you." He finally did, they hugged, and they both were teary-eyed as he left. Afterward Ronan went to the Chancellor estate and tried to say goodbye to Nina. She hugged him, and as usual he didn’t respond, and he left her in tears. Later a box arrived from Ronan. Nina opened it to find another copy of her book she had written about the birth and loss of Ronan, "A Cry in Thin Air", with a note tucked inside. The note said, "I wish I had your gift for words. They seem to come so easily for you. I could never find the right ones to tell you how grateful I am to you for finding me. Thanks, is the best that I came up with. That, and I love you, Mom. Ronan." Nina burst into tears with Paul as Ronan packed his things, including her book, and left town for another secret assignment in parts unknown.

In June 2012, Ronan was asked to return to Genoa City by Victor Newman to help locate his daughter Abby who was supposedly kidnapped, but it turned out to be just a publicity stunt. But when Paul shot and killed his son, Ricky, and was in shock and uncommunicative, Ronan stepped in and got him to explain what had happened. Due to the conflict of interest with Heather and Michael, Ronan took over as the lead investigator for the DA's office on the case. The police were skeptical of Paul's story since no knife was found, and Eden had suffered a head injury so had been unconscious at the time, and later could not even remember why she had been in Ricky's apartment or why she had texted Kevin. The gun was found to be unregistered with serial numbers filed off, so Lauren had to admit to Michael that the gun had been hers and that Paul had taken it away from her. Paul turned himself in, Avery became his attorney, and Paul told his story. Ronan let them know that due to the lack of corroborating evidence, it appeared to be premeditated murder. Before they had to arrest him, Ronan arranged for Nina to fly in from Los Angeles to visit Paul. Nina tried to reassure Paul that a he was a good man, and that he would never have killed Ricky without good reason. Paul still claimed that not matter what the circumstances, he had killed his own son, and therefore was not a good man. Nina accused Ronan of being heartless in going after Paul, but Ronan claimed he was just doing his job. Eden awoke with no memory of what had happened. Daisy's wallet and cell phone were found to have been dumped by Ricky, but it still did not exonerate Paul. Christine arrived and offered to take a sabbatical from the FBI to defend Paul, and he accepted her offer.

Paul was released to attend Ricky's funeral. His brother Father Todd was in Africa so could not attend. Paul told Ricky's grandparents in California, who were outraged, and would not attend. Mary was not mentioned. At the graveside service Paul reminisced Nina and Heather about a father's day card Ricky had made and sent when he had been seven or eight, of a boy looking up at his father with a smile. Ricky had written about his life, sports, and said he loved him and hoped they would see each other, but how the next year Ricky's card had sent just a happy fathers day card and only signed his name – a big clue that he should have seem more of him. Unseen by Paul, a crucifix was dropped on Ricky's grave. After the funeral, Paul was arrested by Ronan for first degree murder.

After several failed attempts to find evidence that would exonerate Paul or get Eden to remember what happened, and because Paul could not leave the state, Christine volunteered to investigate the clues which were mostly in California. Christine returned with the missing video of Ricky killing his girlfriend Rachel on her laptop, but it was not enough to get the charges against Paul dropped. As she apologized to Paul for not coming through for him, he hugged her, and they ended up in a passionate kiss – just as Nina walked in. Later Paul tried to apologize to Nina, but she said goodbye and returned to Los Angeles, saying that she would not be returning.

But in September 2013, Nina returned to Genoa City as a guest for the celebration of life for Katherine Chancellor. Following her death, Katherine's husband Murphy had delivered letters to all of her loved ones. Nina had received a letter suggesting she let go of any resentments, and to live life without anger, pain or fear. Nina realized that being upset over Cricket had kept her from moving on, so before the ceremony she forgave Paul. All of Katherine's loved ones had words to say about her. Nina spoke of how Katherine and Jill had hated her for loving Jill's son Phillip and having his son, but how over the years they had all come to love each other. Following the service, an impromptu marriage was held for Christine and Paul, at Katherine's suggestion. Danny wished them well, and claimed that he had moved on, but his wistful expression during the ceremony said otherwise. When Christine needed a maid of honor, Nina volunteered. Days later when Katherine's will was read, Mackenzie, Phillip, Chance, Brock and Nina were bequeathed one quarter of her estate to be shared equally.

In August 2014, Murphy returned to the Chancellor estate with more instructions left by Katherine before she died telling them to celebrate the anniversary of her death with a party. All her old friends were there, including Nina who came from California. Following a tradition she had learned in her bucket list travels, each guest wrote on paper their desires and fears, then the papers were lit on fire, in hopes of clarifying them, or to imagine her giving them the advice she knew they were missing from her. Nina wrote that Katherine had cured her writer's block and she was working on a novel about a feisty business woman just like her. Noticing that Christine was not in attendance, Nina confronted Paul reminding him that he had dumped her for Cricket, so it had better be the real thing!

Chance, living in Genoa City again, said that he had spent Christmas 2019 with Nina.

After Chance recovered from being shot, Chance and Abby decided to get married immediately. Devon became an ordained minister to marry them in a family only ceremony at the Chancellor estate. Nina returned to town to be his “best mom” and Abby asked Mariah to be her maid of honor. But as guests waited in the living room, Abby was having a meltdown locked in her bathroom. Mariah called in Ashley and Chance, and they managed to talk her out, and reassure her. The wedding was beautiful. Chairs were cleared for a reception where everyone put marital advice on cards in a pretty glass box.

A couple months later, Abby was disappointed to discover she was not yet pregnant. Her doctor found scarring of the uterus after her miscarriage left her unable to carry a baby. Mariah agreed to be their surrogate, but before that could happen Chance found out that he was unable to father a child, likely due to his recent sepsis. Then the Justice Department stepped in, and Chance was called away on a case. He left letters for both Nina and Abby, imploring Abby to go ahead and find a sperm donor and make their baby happen. After Nina and Abby agonized pouring over donor profiles, Devon stepped in and offered to be the donor. Chance called Abby from a burner phone a few times, so knew about Devon and the pregnancy. He sent his favorite sweatshirt to Devon to give to Abby for when she needed it most. Chance was gone for months, throughout the pregnancy and beyond.

Two months after the baby was born, Christine came to Abby with the devastating news that a bomb had leveled the building in Valencia, Spain, which Chance and his colleagues had been using as a safe house. In further news, four were classified as died in line of duty. Abby fought the news hoping he had not been in the building even after being sent a photo of Chance’s watch found buried in the rubble. Then Christine brought her Chance’s wedding band which he never removed. But in a few days, Abby bounced back, ready to fly to Spain to find her husband whom she believed was still alive. Abby suddenly gave the baby to Devon to care for, packed a small bag and left home. Pouring over a cedar box of Chance’s most cherished trinkets, she found his medal of honor won in Iraq. Abby remembered Chance saying that the family who took him in deserved that medal. She found their names Kim and Errol Dunaway and that they lived in Soller, Spain. The operator found a phone number which she called. Kim answered but told Abby she must have a wrong number. A few minutes later Kim called back, said she could not talk, but that Chance was with them, alive but in a bad way and needed her. Excited that she had been right all along, she booked a private plane to Majorka, paying extra to keep it secret, even from Victor Newman. Jack and Ashley took the company jet to Valencia to search for Abby. Kim kept Abby in suspense for quite some time, but Chance finally emerged from another room and they fell into each other’s arms. He told how he had played dead among his dead comrades filled with rage and guilt, then with a concussion and leg torn up he made his way to the Delaneys. Abby called Ashley and they returned to Genoa City with Chance. Once home, Chance’s Section Chief called dismissed him from his mission, and told him they would handle it, putting a guard on Chance and his family. Everyone was thrilled that Chance was home and alive, Nina and Jill making him promise to stop this heroic life now that he had a family. The Newmans threw him a welcome home party. Although he promised not to leave his family again, he frequently drifted off into space still feeling guilty. Christine let Chance know that thanks to his intel, the bombers and their leader were captured. Chance was considering returning to the GCPD as a detective again, but decided to stay home and get to know his son.

Nina spent the 2021 holidays in Australia with her son Phillip. She is writing a series of feature stories on old guard vs new guard in the business world.
